What is peat/turf? Peat/Turf is decomposed vegetable matter (trees, heather etc) decomposed over thousands of years in a wetland environment Men have been cutting (digging) peat from the boglands of Ireland for more than 2000 years....it is cut with a very special spade and goes through a lot of different stages before it can be used as a fuel....it is cut, then spread, and then "footed" which means that it is stood on end, and then it is "about footed" (turned around), stacked when dry, then "dregged" (carried out of the wet bog) and taken home where it is "stacked" and "thatched" meaning piled and covered against the weather. What is the difference between machine and hand cut peat/turf? In recent times peat/turf has been harvested by machines in most areas of Ireland and on an industrial basis in the Midlands of Ireland by the Irish State Company, Bord na Mona. The cutting of Peat by hand is now rare, but can still be found in some areas in the West of Ireland. The peat used in this DVD is 100% hand cut and is of the finest quality available.
